Sometimes I wonder why the dryer Gods hate me. I seem cursed when it comes to dryers. It seems every time I buy one it comes with the wrong cord. If I need a 3 prong cord, it comes with a four, and vice-versa. Fortunately, I’m quite adept at switching them after changing so many of them. I seem to go through a lot of dryers. I chalk it up to having pets and doing all the laundry from my shop. It was the shop laundry that I believe is to blame for the most recent dryer death. I’m actually pretty lucky the whole house didn’t burn down. I did laundry Thursday evening and when I went to get it out of the dryer I was met with a cloud of black smoke! Don’t know if you’ve ever smelled burnt sheets but it’s not good. I started to take the sheets out thinking that the heater coil or engine was on fire- not sure if dryers have an engine but something makes it run!- and the sheets themselves were smoldering and burned! I didn’t even know that was possible! They weren’t actually in flames but pretty damn close! The dryer seemed fine, but the smell was so bad I couldn’t see using it again. Plus- I think I know what might have happened. I’ve used that dryer for years for my laundry from the shop. As you can imagine that means hundreds of sheets. And while I use quite a concoction to get the oil out of the sheets in the wash, it’s never all the way out. So, my guess is over the years the oil has built up in the dryer and somehow the dryer setting had got turned to high heat- I usually used medium heat. So I think the extra heat and the years of oil equaled burnt sheets.
So, I got on Facebook Marketplace yesterday and messaged about 15 people about their dryers for sale and got lucky! Now, I’m pretty sure I overpaid but I was desperate. I hate using laundromats. I work long days so stopping to do laundry is just something I don’t like to do. The guy I bought it from was great and delivered it and helped me move it inside. I had already wrestled the old dryer out to the garage myself- must admit I was a bit impressed with myself on that one. I’m not very big so I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to- but I did! Anyhow, he helped me get the new one in and as I went to plug it in I saw the plug. Damn the plug Gods!! It was a 3 prong and mine is a 4. Well, hell…I should have known. Fortunately, as I mentioned, I’ve done this before. So, 15 minutes later the cords were switched and I was doing laundry. There’s something to be said for being handy around the house. I had the tools I needed and the know how to do it. If I hadn’t however, there’s always YouTube- which is where I went when I needed to unplug the A/C drain in my Toyota.
I’m pretty proud of my ability to fix things. I’m no expert, but a few tools, YouTube and HomeDepot can take you far. I say HomeDepot as opposed to Menards or Lowes simply because it seems that’s where the retired older guys work and they are always willing to help me sort out what I need for the job. The other places are great as far as having stuff, but if you need advice HomeDepot is where it’s at.
There’s no real point to this blog apparently. I was going to try to put in some great life lesson, but I guess not today. Unless you didn’t know about HomeDepot and the retired guys- maybe that’s what someone needed to hear today.Well, until next time- peace out!
